i used to have desktop gadgets and stuff, but since i started using igoogle as my home page, i moved most of that functionality to the browser so i can conserve RAM.

'Splain for me, please. I don't know what it's specifically called, but I use some Google home page thing...but it just has shortcuts for frequently-browsed Innernette sites.

that's probably what it is. there are more different types of gadgets you can put on it, but i just like to have the weather and all my sites so i can check sites. all i really had on my desktop gadgets were weather and RSS, so this replaces both of those for me.

kk, I get what you mean now. Never heard about straightening, srs.

Don't most cartridges have a spring cushion thing behind them? It'd be absolutely hellish to straighten a blade with some of that going on.

Yeah. Spring-type action plus only access to one side of the blade. So it's clearly not even remotely what it would be with a knife or straight razor or something like that. But there still is feasibly a slight benefit to it. Just a guess, but the pulling against the whiskers would probably make the blade edge more likely to curl upwards more than anything else, and a rub against a surface of enough strength or texture or whatever might have an ok shot at curling it back somewhat straight. So obviously, if you want the best shave, go with a straight razor, keep it sharpened and stropped, etc. If you're using cartridge razors, this probably won't help a ton, but might get you an extra couple shaves. On a shaving forum I came across looking for that stropping info, there's actually plenty of people that swear by jeans or newspaper to strop safety razor blades on the cheap.

I'm guessing you mean a straight razor (the folding type of razor). I had one several years ago, but never got up the nerve to shave my face completely with it. An electric razor would be nice, but I prefer shaving right after I shower. I'd put it off if I had an electric shaver because it's convenient and I could shave somewhere outside the bathroom sink.

See, I'm the opposite. I always shave right before a shower, so I can just wash up in the shower to easily deal with blood, shaving cream / gel / oil, or hair clippings. Not the best way when using a blade, but actually the recommended time to shave with an electric.

In the past I always used the cartrdige kind of razor. I was a sucker. Now I use an electric shaver which is convenient in a thousand ways, if not exactly a very interesting procedure. I have been thinking of switching to a safety/DE razor though, if only just to try it. Is it odd that I miss using shaving soap and stuff like that?

I know someone who always uses an open blade razor, and is a real bore as he likes to proselytise about it.

I sorta like both as they both have their merits. Cartridge gets a smoother, closer shave, and depending on what you use, can be pretty pleasant. I got to liking King Of Shaves shaving oil. You don't need to use a ton of it. I usually shave with the grain once then against it, since I still feel like sandpaper otherwise. With the shaving oil, just one application of it lasts through both, unlike with gel or cream where you have to reapply anytime you're going over an area. It's also a thin coat / transparent basically, so you can actually see where you're shaving. I rarely use a blade anymore, but when I do, that's all I'll use.

I really do need to invest in a much better electric one of these days when I have the money. My first one was a super cheap rotary for like $20 on sale. My current is a foil for about $35 or 40 that worked a lot better initially. I'm sure the blades need replacing by now, but it's never worked great on anything past about 4 or 5 days growth.
